TPOL Speech I can honesty say that this year has been my favorite year in high school. Salutations fellow advisers and advisees. As you may already know, my name is Carlos Nava. I am fifteen years olds and I am in ninth grade. For my TPOL, I will be discussing revision, who I am as a learner, my most proud moments in high school, and my goals for the future. My assignment that best shows revision is the Toy Story 4 project. In the Toy Story 4 project, we were expected to make a toy for a child within the age group of eight to twelve. We made these toys using geometric shapes and materials like cardboard or wood. On my first draft of this assignment, I made a wooden fish. ( Picture of wooden fish) I made this because the kid that I was assigned asked me for a clown fish. After asking my peers for feedback, they suggested that I make something else because the point of the questionnaire was to ask them questions to find out what toy we think they would like as a toy. (Picture of kid). (Picture of wooden fish and minecraft dog side by side). I revised the first draft and started from scratch. I started by graphing a large piece of cardboard and cutting out the pieces necessary to make a mine craft dog. I determined that I would make a minecraft dog because I saw that the kid I interviewed liked minecraft and his favorite animal was a dog. My final grade on this project was 80% which is a B. I learned that through revision you can improve your work substantially. I learn best by being involved in a project. That is why I describe myself as a hands a learner. This is why HTHI’s project based system is designed for students who learn like me. Because I am a hands on learner (kinesthetic learner), I am very good at projects and working in groups thanks to HTHI. In the October Sky Project, I used being a kinesthetic learner to my advantage. We were taught what makes a object aerodynamic, I used this knowledge to build a very aerodynamic rocket. (picture of rocket) Including other teammates in a project is a skill that I find very difficult. I often put the entire weight of a project on my shoulders Through the year, we have had many projects and I have had to learn to include other in these projects and trust that they will do their share of the work. As a learner, I realized that this year I have learned how to trust and work with my fellow classmates. The work I am most proud of from this school year is the Me in We project. For the Me in We Project we would work in groups of five to six students to collage wooden cut outs of downtown San Diego's most famous buildings. The essential question was, How does your culture contribute to who you are as an individual and how does each individual shape the HTHI community? I was chosen by my Humanities teacher (Jill) to work with one other student, from my class, to use Adobe Illustrator to create the cut out of the buildings. After we created these buildings on Adobe Illustrator, we used a laser cutter to cut the buildings from thin pieces of wood. (Picture of 9th grade commes wall.) I am most proud of of mastering Adobe Illustrator and making some of the most famous building in San Diego. This project shows that I am determined student and take my work seriously. Jill choose me and three other students to work on this part of the project because of our artistic talents and experience with Adobe Illustrator. I thrived in this project because it was a chance for me to use my artistic talent. Looking ahead, some academic/personal goals I have for 10th grade is to learn how to organize my time, and to stay focused when doing homework or just being in class. If I were to give advice to the future 9th graders, I would tell them that if they want to succeed in HTHI they would need to make sure that they turn in every assignment and to make friends, not enemies. So far I have discussed the importance of revision, who I am as a learner, and my goals for the future. Thank you for your time. |
