For my presentation, I plan to use a projector and a computer that I would borrow from my internship. To use the projector, I asked a coworker of my to teach me how to set it up.
The only tools I will use to present my iPOL are google slides and a projector. I would use a remote to change slides on my presentation but sadly, my internship and I are both lacking of this item. To prepare for this presentation, I am practicing in front of my posture and vocal projection in front of my mirror so I could have an idea of what I look like and sound like while presenting. I am also preparing questions and answers. I did this so I could have an idea of what to say, what type of questions that I would have to answer, and how to answer them. While working at my internship I developed an appreciation for my youth. Though it might seem a strange thing to appreciate something a simple as my youth, the time I spent at my internship showed me how little I really have to complain about. As a minor, I don’t have responsibilities like bills, grocery shopping, etc. At ODI, my main job is to give a helping hand or shorten someone's workload. This usually involves preparing projects for the elementary/middle school students in City Heights, that ODI caters to.

1/24/2017 0 Comments Week 4 - January 24thDuring my internship, I learned the importance of communication and self advocacy in everyday task. I learned quickly that I had to notify my mentor after completing my task or I could go the rest of the day without anything to do. Though this may not seem all bad, I prefer to be doing anything (even if the task is tedious) rather to doing nothing or just being on my phone. After the first time, I learned that communication with my mentor is crucial if I want to be productive with my time during internship.
1/23/2017 0 Comments Week 4 - January 23rdSo far my internship has been a great experience that has widen my horizons for what I’d like to pursue as a career in the future.
The project I’ve been working on is a art piece that’s main focus point is ocean life. I was inspired to make this because of the many art pieces that are in ODI. While walking around a admiring them for so long (me being the critic I am), I thought that I could make a art piece that summarizes the work my co-workers do, while still being pleasing to the eye. While working on the projects I was assigned to do, I learned that, when I apply myself, I could be a very organized individual. This surprised me because I always thought of myself as the opposite. 1/20/2017 2 Comments Week 3 - January 20thThe responsibilities at my internship differentiate from the responsibilities of my typical school environment. For instance, though the amount of work I do at my internship is similar in quantity to the amount of work I do at my internship, the task are quite different. One thing I do enjoy about the work I do at internship that I can't say the same for school is that the work I do there stays there. By this I mean, I do not take my work home with me unlike school where if I didn't complete my work in class, I would take it home to finish my assignment.
As stated in a previous post, a skill I've improved on that I can see myself taking with me into my next school year is my organizational skills and time management skills. I feel like these skill have drastically improved since I started my internship. I rely on these skill to get work done in both the office and the field. I plan to take theses skills back to school and use them in my classes to work efficiently whether it be class work or project work. I've really enjoyed my time working with ODI because I feel though the work I do there is often mundane, I actually makes a difference in the community of City Heights. 1/19/2017 0 Comments Week 3 - January 19tha. What limitations have you recognized in yourself that you want to overcome during internship, or use this internship experience to help you overcome
The first limitation I came across was not knowing how to use a lot of the out dated programs that I need to use to complete the task I was given. Asked my co-workers how to use some of them but after asking about 3 programs, I felt like I was just being annoying. So instead of continuing to ask them, I turned to my next tool, the internet. I found how to use enough of the programs to complete my works for that day. Whenever I come across a problem similar to this, I now just ask the internet and receive detailed instructions on how to complete my task at hand. b. What lessons or experiences at your internship will you bring back to school to help you further improve in your academics? As stated in a previous post, during my time with the Ocean Discovery Institute, I’ve seen my organizational skills and time management skills drastically improve. I rely on these skill to get work done in both the office and the field. I plan to take theses skills back to school and use them in my classes to work efficiently while work on class work or project work. 1/18/2017 0 Comments Week 3 - January 18thFor me, the biggest challenge I've faced is restlessness while sitting at my desk all day. To solve this, I've taken advantage of being next to the bay. During my lunch break, I walk around the bay while eating to stretch and get some fresh air. this seem to solve to problem of restlessness in my chair but not my boredom. But for actual problems, I was assigned to design a certificate of sort on a program I didn't know how to use. To solve this predicament, I asked a co-worker if they knew how to use it. She didn't know how to use it either so I just looked up a YouTube video and understood enough of the program to get the task complete. My workers told me that when ever they run into a problem similar to mine, just looking up things on how to do it, on the internet, really helps. Picture of the Day
1/17/2017 0 Comments Week 3 - January 17th, 2017Everett Allen - Everett seem to be enjoying his time at his internship while gaining important skills that won’t just need to used in a future career but simply important skills he'll need to know throughout life. These experiences are similar to mine because,as read in my last post, the skills I am learning at ODI won’t just benefit me in a career but in everyday task. I do envy that Everett has little no no complaints with his internship and sees himself possibly pursuing it as a career. Jennifer Perry - Jennifer also seems to be enjoying herself at her internship. And yet again, though I am happy that she is more sure than ever that she found what she wants to pursue in the future, I envy my friend for her confidence in her sureness of her future career path. One thing that I did find that she shared was that we worked with children. But other than that, I really couldn’t find anything else in common with our internship. Kennedy Anderson - Kennedy, similar to me, does not enjoy sitting in front on a desk for a prolonged period of time. It’s good to see that someone else is sharing a similar experience to me with my internship and is not sure what they want to do as a career but a least know it’s not behind a desk. Selife of the Day
1/13/2017 3 Comments Week 2 - January 13tha. How do you see yourself growing or changing over the course of your internship?
1/12/2017 2 Comments Week 2 - January 12thSocial Interactions at my internship happen very frequently. Workers at my internship are (from what I see) in small groups and given large task like organizing a month's worth of lessons. They complete these task quickly and efficiently by assigning the workload evenly and working on the small piece individually. During the time of individual work time, the room is usually dead silent. After everybody has completed their individual assignments, they collaborate on what ideas they've come up with and critique each other to improve the final product. This efficientness reflects in final product (class projects) of the non-profit. While I was shadowing a lesson during the first week, is was clear how much effort has been put into the lessons ODI makles. They often rehearse these lesson until they've memorized most of it. SELFIE OF THE DAY1/10/2017 0 Comments Week 2 - January 10th The work I do at my internship benefits both the Ocean Discovery Institute and the students of City Heights. I often am given task at my internship like organizing files and making spreadsheets. This helps the Ocean Discovery Institute by decreasing their workload and saving them money by not having to have a employee the work. I also prepare projects and experiments/ projects.
Students all over City Heights benefit from the work done at the Ocean Discovery Institute. The Ocean Discovery Institute engages, educates, and inspires youth from urban and diverse backgrounds through science-based exploration of biology. The Ocean Discovery institute benefits the students of City Height because it prepares them to go into a STEM field as a career and become tomorrows scientific and environmental leaders. |
